Travel Insurance: A Must-Have for Your Visitors

When friends and family visit Europe, no one expects a medical emergency to interrupt their vacation. However, in the military community, planning for the unexpected is essential. From replacing lost medications or treating a cold to handling serious emergencies like car accidents or heart attacks, ensuring your visitors have proper healthcare coverage is critical.

Why Travel Insurance Matters
Medical emergencies abroad can be costly and stressful without proper insurance. For example:
                •              Medical Flights: If a visitor requires a medical evacuation back to the United States, the cost can exceed tens of thousands of dollars or more depending on the need for specialized equipment and medical personnel.
                •              Health Insurance Limitations: Many U.S.-based health insurance plans, including Medicare, do not cover care outside the United States. Even those that do often require patients to pay upfront and submit claims for reimbursement, which can take time. Without adequate coverage, these expenses can lead to significant financial hardship.

Eligibility at Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs)
Visitors without a military, retiree, or DOD civilian ID card are not eligible for care at Military Treatment Facilities, except in emergencies involving sight, life, or limb. Even eligible patients may need to seek care from local civilian providers if appointments at MTFs are unavailable or if the facility is too far away.

What to Look for in Travel Insurance
When choosing travel insurance, visitors should ask:
                •              Medical Flights: Does the policy cover medical evacuation to the United States?
                •              Direct Payments: Will the insurance pay healthcare providers directly, or does the visitor need to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement?
                •              Coverage Details: What services are included, and what are the coverage limits?
Thorough research is key to finding a policy that offers peace of mind.

Plan Ahead for a Worry-Free Visit
Helping your visitors secure comprehensive travel insurance ensures they are prepared for any medical needs that arise during their stay.
